This week's clip of the week is the choice of Charles Stuart
Ay Que Me Abraso
For my Clip of the Week I delved into my musical sock drawer to bring you a taste of the music of 16th and 17th century Spain. This piece "Ay Que Me Abraso” is by Juan García de Zéspedes (1619 –1678) a Mexican composer, singer, viol player, and teacher whose musical compositions ranged from sacred to secular folk inspired pieces.
The video clip is very shaky but I chose it because it conveys such an intimate performance which is exciting, full of melody and improvisation, rhythm and a delightfully close engagement with the audience. It features Jordi Savall, in concert at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, in Mexico with a gathering of star players drawn from his Hespèrion XXI with vocal ensemble La Capella Reial de Catalunya, Mexico’s baroque group Tembembe Ensamble Continuo, and his wife and long-time musical partner, Montserrat Figueras.
