Verdi’s Requiem was written in 1873, and was composed in memory of the Italian poet and novelist Alessandro Manzoni, whom Verdi greatly admired. First performed 139 years ago in a secular setting, the operatic quality of this Requiem seems more suited to the stage. Flowing between the dramatic and the lyrical, the piece has become one of the most popular in the choral repertoire.
As in 2008, the Southampton Philharmonic Choir and Southampton University Philharmonic Choir will be performing the piece without scores – no mean feat, but one that greatly enhances the audience's experience.
