Theatrical, dramatic, electrifying…
Verdi’s Requiem was written in 1873, and was composed in memory of the Italian poet and novelist Alessandro Manzoni, whom Verdi greatly admired. First performed 139 years ago in a secular setting, the operatic quality of this Requiem seems more suited to the stage. Flowing between the dramatic and the lyrical, the piece has become one of the most popular in the choral repertoire.
As in 2008, the Southampton Philharmonic Choir and Southampton University Philharmonic Choir will be performing the piece without scores – no mean feat, but one that greatly enhances the audience's experience.
Praise for our 2008 performance of Verdi's Requiem:
'What an outstanding success last night ! Terrific. The Sanctus went with real panache and the final climax was overwhelming.' M Hall
'...a brilliant experience' J Parry
'The sound was spine-tingling - truly glorious!' J Randall
'A friend came to the rehearsal in the afternoon and went back to fetch his wife, saying: "You MUST come along and see this - they are singing WITHOUT scores, and it's MARVELLOUS".' E. Howard
Recommended recording:
David Gibson, conductor, is full of praise for the Giulini recording. The choirs will do their utmost to meet his expectations!
