Choral workshop
with composer, Philip Stopford
and SPC Musical Director, David Gibson
The Gregg School, West End, Southampton
Saturday, 7 February
Southampton Philharmonic Choir
Whether you're a member of the Phil, one of our seasoned workshop guests or someone who's only just stumbled across us on the net, you're welcome to apply for a place at our choral workshop with the composer and conductor, Philip Stopford, at The Gregg School, Southampton, on Saturday, 7 February. In two groups, we'll explore six works by Philip, and everyone will work with both Philip himself and with the choir's Musical Director, David Gibson. Over the course of the day, we'll be focusing on some of the skills required for singing a cappella and also in a smaller ensemble than the Phil's usual 180 voices! The afternoon session will be followed by a short showcase, demonstrating some of what we've learned.
The repertoire
We will be working on six of Philip's compositions:
- Ave, regina caelorum
- The Beatitudes
- Do not be afraid
- Irish blessing
- Lully, lulla, lullay
- The Spirit of the Lord
The workshop fee includes the loan of all the music you will need for the day.
The venue
The Gregg School at West End, Southampton (SO18 3RR) provides us with a lovely setting for our workshop. The school building was once the home of Lord and Lady Swaythling, and the listed garden, which was planned by Gertrude Jekyll, is maintained through the efforts of the Friends of Townhill Park Gardens.
The schedule
Doors open at 9.30 am for registration, and the workshop begins at 10.00 am with a warm-up session with Philip Stopford. Participants will then join their group for the morning sessions (one group working with Philip, the other with David). After lunch, the leaders will switch groups for the afternoon session, and the workshop closes with an informal performance by the groups for their peers, finishing at 4.00 pm. Please bring a packed lunch, but tea, coffee, fruit juice and biscuits will be available (no charge) at the morning and afternoon tea-breaks.
