Docklands Sinfonia
David Gibson conductor
For our March 2025 concert we've plundered the baroque treasury of musical gems! Our orchestra is the London-based Docklands Sinfonia, and David Gibson conducts.
Featuring three of the Baroque era’s most beautiful and celebrated works, the concert opens with George Frideric Handel’s Silete Venti; a wonderfully expressive cantata for solo soprano voice, it ranks among Handel’s finest compositions.
Next, the first of the two choral items: Johann Sebastian Bach’s Magnificat in D, a splendid and jubilant composition scored for five soloists, a five-part choir, and (for its time) a large orchestra. It’s a piece that truly showcases Bach’s unparalleled mastery of vocal and instrumental interplay.
Finally, we present a piece that’s renowned for its vibrant choral harmonies and spirited orchestration. By turns joyful and solemn, melancholic and festive, it is Antonio Vivaldi’s most famous choral work: his Gloria.
